Antisemitism in Fiction and Fantasy
Molly Rookwood

Greedy goblins who run the banks? Hook-nosed witches luring German children into the woods? Antisemitism was present before World War Two and persists in the world today. In this presentation, I will be discussing the prevalence of antisemitism in fiction and fantasy, with an emphasis on tropes that could be so deeply entrenched in our stories that we might no longer recognize them as antisemitic. Molly Rookwood will give pointers on how to identify these antisemitic tropes and how to guide your writers in a less harmful direction.

The Illusion of Perfection:
Finding and Appreciating “Good Enough”
Rhonda Kronyk

Editors take pride in submitting their best work to their clients. But many editors have learned not to read the published copies of the books they work on because they invariably find errors they missed. We sometimes succumb to the illusion of perfection, which can cause self-doubt and imposter syndrome to sneak into our thinking. Today, we have the added pressure of ensuring that the work we do follows equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) guidelines. Knowing how powerful words are, the desire to avoid all mistakes can become overwhelming. Rhonda Kronyk will use her experiences as an editor and EDI researcher and public speaker to help participants recognize when the desire to be perfect negatively affects their business and their mental health. Participants will get Rhonda’s strategies for accepting that “good enough” does not mean submitting substandard work and is better for their mental and physical health.

Editing in AMA Style
Eloise DeHaan

Every style guide has its niceties, and the AMA Manual of Style: A Guide for Authors and Editors, 11th edition, has some doozies. Spoiler alert: Use Arabic numerals even under 10. The abbreviation AMA expands to the American Medical Association. This 176-year-old 270,000-member professional association publishes 13 scholarly journals in the JAMA Network that are bound by this style guide. Other publishers—who might become clients—require its use, too. Eloise DeHaan will enumerate the major points in the manual’s style guidance for text and citations. She will cover its guidance on inclusive language and the real-world fails in that regard. And she will share her sometimes dolorous user experience with the online edition.
